then you wake up one morning you're in love with the person...

Yes! Yes And Yes! I can say it is worth it. My best friend of 15 years has now been my husband for three and a half years. We were engaged for two years before we married just to make sure to not ruin our great friendship. We are very happy together and still best friends.
