Rejections and Fear.
It's easier to be rejected by someone you're not able to see. The computer is like alcohol. It makes it easier to be Socially Lubricated.
For example: I can walk up to a cute guy at the bar and say hi and he just turns around without any word. Someone is getting a slam in a place crowded with others. People will laugh and feel pity for you. Online if I notice a cute guys pic, I'll say hi and the ball is rolling. If he noticies my pic and he likes it then we'll start to chat and go from there.

In this morden age we are ever much more busier people and online dating just helps us utilise technology to ease the modern day pressures .As with everything it has its good bits and bad bits but all things considered it a fantastic addition to our social lives.
